Why Sabbaticals Are My Jam

I’ve taken sabbaticals periodically over the years, and they’ve been crucial to my well-being and self-preservation. Hustle and bustle has never been my style, though I often convinced myself it was normal. It never was my cup of tea, but it’s funny how I kept trying to believe it was—because I thought I had to.

Conventional thinking tells us it’s normal to be worn down by taxing tasks, rigid schedules and ways of thinking, and the endless chase of algorithms and trends. Although I never subscribed to hustle culture, I was caught up in long commutes, fast walking, and the constant rush of it all. And then we wonder why we’re exhausted, with no time for play. But when is it ever enough? That’s just it—it never is.

So, I had to make a choice. I decided to live the life I wanted, taking sabbaticals.

They say (and I don’t know who “they are”), “If you do what you love, you’ll never work a day in your life.” I don’t believe that. We all still need to earn a living. Even doing what I love can turn into a burden because, at the end of the day, it’s still work. And I prefer ease any day.
